Some History
Tracks were first laid in 1879 south from Alamosa, Colorado.
The town of Antonito was built by the railroad company because the nearby town of Conejos would not agree to allow the tracks to be built through the town.
The railroad yards in Antonito date from 1881.
The town of Chama began earlier. A settlement existed in 1865 and by 1870, the first of many sawmills was built by E.K. Caldwell. He laid out a new townsite on the hill to protect from flooding. The railroad arrived in 1880.
